Sight words are words that students need to learn to recognize and read by sight,
rather than sounding out, so as to achieve English reading fluency. Moreover since
many sight words have irregular spellings, it is often not possible for students
to sound them out, even if it were desirable.
Dolch sight words are perhaps the most popular list of sight words used by teachers.
They are used both in teaching children to read, and in English as a second language (ESL) courses.
The Dolch sight word list derives from research compiled by Edward William Dolch PhD for his 1948 book,
Problems in Reading, and the list was developed by surveying children's literature of the time.
From this survey, Edward Dolch generated a list of 220 "service words", which he subdivided into five grade
levels (pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade), as well as generating a separate list of 95 common
nouns.
Creating Dolch Sight Words Bingo Cards
Here is an example bingo card creating using the Dolch Sight Words Nouns bingo card template:
Click Create New Bingo Card Project... (or click New... on the File menu).
A dialog box will appear. Click the Reading tab.
Select Dolch Sight Words - Nouns by clicking it with the mouse (you may need to scroll through the list), then click OK (or simply double click on Dolch Sight Words - Nouns).
You are now ready to print your bingo cards, or you can customize them (using colors and fonts, by deleting unwanted items or adding new items, changing the bingo card size, etc.) before printing if you choose.
